The office rings at Danny’s office in Pittsburgh.

Ma jumps. “I’ll get it, it’s Danny.”

She picks up the phone and Irene gets as close as she can to the earpiece without rubbing against Ma’s head.

“Danny! Danny!”

“Hello, ma’am. Is this Hubble Insurance? I need a quote.”

Ma passes the phone to Irene without looking at her and walks out the door. A few minutes later, Irene sits next to Ma in a booth at Rui’s.

“He called a few days ago, Bridget.”

“Yes, but he didn’t say anything.”

“That’s not true. You told me that he said not to worry and to tell Marla that he would write to her.”

“Does that seem like anything?”

“Well . . .” Rui arrives with a pot of coffee.

“Chili, girls?”

Ma and Irene are sharing the pain of loss and have found some solace in each other’s company. That’s not to say that Ma doesn’t want to strangle Irene from time to time.
